Building layout is developed around the two large outdoor courtyard areas in form of deeply shaded reveals. Building design captures summer breezes, allows for high level of cross ventilation. The project intent was to deliver an innovative and climate responsive design outcome that would bring delight to the end users. Building is based on 3 x3m2 light weight structure grid module. Due to the difficult north - south site orientation, the diffuse light access to the interiors has been provided with the well shaded and continuous high level polycarbonate cladding thus reducing the requirements for low level east and west facing windows. The clients brief was to create a design outcome that works with the irregular site shape and provides well shaded and ventilated building interiors. The central feature of the design outcome is the spine wall that leads visitor from the entry garden through the entire building. Located in the waterfront suburb of Rowes Bay, Townsville the project represents a form of contemporary beach house. The sculptural approach to the design is driven by the building functionality. The glazed ground level is elevated above the entry driveway and extends to the street to form a large patio with a lap pool at its edge. The addition of a new wing provides a studio apartment at the ground level and a larger study room on the upper level. An extensive elevated outdoor deck area creates a link between the new building and the refurbished part of the original house. The street frontage of the building was retained with minor modifications while a new 2 level extension provides a link with the north facing rear of the property.
